Charles Vincent 'Charlie' Allo, 82, former columnist with the Island Gazette - Port City Daily

Charlie is survived by his son, Johnathan Ward, and his wife, Stella; daughter, Melanie Heath; grandson, Dylan Hayward, and his fiancée, Loren Wilson; great-granddaughter, Ellie; grandson, Griffin Hayward; son, Anthony Heath, and his wife, Barbara; grandchildren, Rogan, Ainsley and Morgan; and cousins, Sally Jo Glendenning-Capozio, and her husband, Anthony, Barbara Glendenning-Weyhrauch, and her husband, Alan, Marie Traphagen-Gottlieb, Barbara Traphagen-Chambers and Betty Zeccardi.Charlie was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Lanier Allo; and parents, Joseph John Spada and Isabelle Glendenning Spada.Charlie was born March 16, 1936, in Brooklyn, New York. After serving 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, he decided to retire calling Fort Fisher/Kure Beach home for more than 50 years. Over the years, he served on several Town of Kure Beach committees and councils. He graduated from The University of North Carolina in 1980 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. Charlie was an avid reader and passionate about continuing personal and professional education, proved by his mastery of pottery; he went on to lecture at UNCW on the subject. For many years, he wrote an opinion column on a weekly basis for the Island Gazette designed to spark thoughtful public debate on topics in society. After being a bachelor for 59 years, he married Pat in 1995.A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 5, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 300 Harper Ave., Carolina Beach, with a reception to follow. Pastor Shawn Blackwelder will officiate services.
